Lochs and Lakes

Aberdeenshire and Royal Deeside are home to some truly spectacular lochs, each offering year-round scenic beauty. On the Balmoral Estate, Loch Muick is a visitor favourite, with its serene waters and the historic Glas-allt Shiel hunting lodge built for Queen Victoria in 1868. Nature lovers will enjoy Loch of Strathbeg Nature Reserve, where beach walks, pond dipping and birdwatching, including thousands of wintering pink-footed geese, bring the outdoors to life. For a touch of magic, visit Lochan Uaine, the “Green Loch,” whose emerald waters are said to be coloured by pixies or by the forest below, making it a mystical and unforgettable sight.

Cairngorms National Park

Spanning twice the size of the Lake District, the Cairngorms National Park is the UK’s largest national park, where dramatic mountains, tranquil lochs, ancient forests and historic castles meet. Explore scenic walks to Loch Muick, spot red deer and capercaillie or wander the forest trails at Cambus O’ May for a chance to see golden eagles. Adventure-seekers can enjoy skiing, mountain biking or high-octane routes at Glenshee and The Lecht, while those after a slower pace can immerse themselves in the region’s rich culture with the Ballater Highland Games, Lonach Gathering, and the famous Braemar Gathering.
