Towns and villages
Inverurie
The main town in the Garioch, Inverurie combines independent shops, cafés and local farmers market every second Saturday of the month from 9am-1pm. It’s a lively base for exploring the surrounding countryside, with regular events and easy access to nearby walking routes.
Insch
Surrounded by farmland and open skies, Insch is a peaceful village overlooked by the hill of Dunnideer, home to the remains of an ancient hillfort and one of the area’s most striking viewpoints.
Kemnay
Set on the banks of the River Don, Kemnay is known for its scenic riverside walks and strong granite heritage, with woodland and countryside paths offering a calm escape.
Kintore
One of Scotland’s oldest royal burghs, Kintore blends deep-rooted history with a modern, welcoming community, surrounded by countryside trails and open landscapes.
Food and drink
The Garioch offers a strong and varied food and drink scene, shaped by independent businesses, local produce and welcoming hospitality.
In Inverurie, the popular farmers’ market, held on the second Saturday of every month, celebrates local producers, seasonal goods and artisan products.
Across the area, independent cafés, restaurants and pubs provide plenty of choice, whether you’re stopping for a relaxed lunch or an evening meal after exploring the countryside.
For a well-earned refreshment after a walk up Bennachie, The Old Post Office offers a relaxed and welcoming stop, ideal for a post-hike coffee and something sweet.
In Inverurie, The Kilted Frog is a popular spot for coffee, cakes and light bites, while a range of sit-down restaurants and bars cater for every occasion. The Fennel Restaurant offers fine dining and cocktails in a contemporary setting, while traditional pubs such as The Drouthy Laird provide a warm, relaxed atmosphere rooted in local character.
Outdoors and nature
The Garioch is defined by its accessible countryside, outdoor activities and wide-open views, making it ideal for everything from gentle exploration to more active adventures.
The most iconic outdoor experience in the area is Bennachie, with its network of walking routes offering everything from forest trails to rewarding summit climbs. The Bennachie Visitor Centre is easily reached by car or bike.
Beyond Bennachie, the River Don and surrounding countryside offer excellent opportunities for walking, cycling, and wildlife watching. Enjoy scenic routes through farmland, woodland and riverside settings.
At Keithall, walkers can enjoy peaceful countryside trails where wildlife is often part of the experience, with regular sightings of birds, deer, rabbits and squirrels.
Fishing is also a popular activity across the area, with quiet stretches of river offering tranquil spots to enjoy the natural surroundings.
History and heritage
The Garioch has a rich and varied heritage, with ancient monuments, grand estates and traces of early settlement all set within its rolling landscape.
One of the area’s most significant landmarks is Castle Fraser, a striking Scottish baronial tower house set within extensive gardens and parkland near Kemnay. As one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, it offers a fascinating insight into aristocratic life, with richly decorated interiors, grand staircases and sweeping views across the surrounding countryside.
Evidence of much earlier occupation can be found at the Loanhead of Daviot stone circle, a well-preserved recumbent stone circle that reflects the region’s prehistoric past and deep-rooted ceremonial landscape.
Nearby, the Broomend of Crichie Pictish stones provide a rare and important link to Scotland’s early medieval period, offering a glimpse into the symbolic art and culture of the Picts who once lived in the area.
