Looking for the perfect walking spots to take in wonderful winter scenery? There's no shortage of magical locations throughout Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire that'll get you into the festive spirit. Get inspired by these mesmerising photos that have been taken over the years!

1. Aberdeen

Kicking off this list is this phenomenal shot of Aberdeen city. The combination of the snowy cityscape and architecture blend together beautifully With so much to see on your travels, this walking spot will sure lead you down many paths!

2. Balmedie Beach

We’re used to white sandy beaches in the North-east, but this is taking it to a whole new level. You can almost smell the crisp sea breeze as you look at this shot of Balmedie Beach. Take on the magnificent sandy dunes to unveil the gorgeous crashing waves of the North Sea.

3. Balmoral Castle

A castle that needs no introduction, Balmoral Castle is the Scottish home of the Royal Family and it’s nothing short of a fairy-tale when it takes on its winter attire. A perfect walk to take the dog, explore this famous attraction for free this winter! Please see winter opening times where you will be able to walk the grounds, view the castle's ancient exterior and visit the Mews Gift Shop and restaurant. Please be aware not all paths are maintained during winter months, sometimes pathways may be icy under foot and may not be suitable.

4. Braemar

What do you get when you cross a Wes Anderson movie with a Christmas classic? Probably something like this. The Great North of Scotland Railway building is one of the most photographed spots in Braemar. Add snow to the mix and it’s somehow even more charming! As one of the coldest destinations in the UK, make sure to wrap up warm before you get ready to explore it's unique winter charm!

5. Bridge of Don, Aberdeen

A wee layer of snow and Aberdeen starts to look more like Narnia than reality.  From Seaton Park to Scotstown Moor, explore the wonderful and wintery spots in this part of the region.

6. Brig O'Balgownie

Taken from the ancient Brig O'Balgownie, this shot emphasises just how lovely Christmas time in Aberdeen can look. If your into history and heritage, this walks for you! Roam the cobbled streets and historical cottages filled with a unique flair that almost seems part of a fairytale.

7. Castle Fraser

Another one of the North-east's mesmerising landmarks, Castle Fraser makes for a perfect winter's walk with all the family, including the dog! Car parking is available onsite and free for National Trust for Scotland members.

8. Kirkhill Forest

Here is an example of a photo that would fit perfectly on a Christmas card - or even framed in your living room! Kirkhill Forest is an ideal walking spot this winter, perfect for birdwatchers and wildlife spotters.

9. Dunnottar Castle

One of the most iconic castles in Scotland, Dunnottar Castle is a must-visit when you're in the region this winter. A short walk away from quirky coastal town Stonehaven, explore two iconic locations in one day!

10. Fyvie Castle

Imagine emerging through the trees and being greeted with this beautiful sight. You can practically hear the snow crunching under your feet as you approach Fyvie Castle. Although the castle and tearoom are closed for the winter months, there's nothing stopping you from exploring it's beautiful landscape and grounds all year round.

11. Glen Tanar

Glen Tanar completely transforms into a winter wonderland once the snow falls on this Royal Deeside highlight. As the perfect base for exploring the Scottish outdoors, wrap up warm and even get the chance to go deer stalking.

12. Haddo House

Haddo House Estate looks incredible in every season. This is a great spot on a bright and crisp winter’s day! Covering almost 240 acres of woodland, grassland, parkland, and water, Haddo House Country Park is ideal for the entire family, with around four miles of wheelchair-friendly surfaced paths. Please note some areas may have rough surfaces or inclines.

13. Old Aberdeen

Old Aberdeen transports you back in time as you wander down the cobbled streets. Add some snow to the mix and it’s even more magical.

14. Pennan

Charming fishing villages are the norm in Aberdeenshire. Pennan is an idyllic landmark sandwiched between the wild North Sea and the frosted cliffs. Spend the day exploring the land and getting lost in its unique beauty.
