About The Eagle and the Unicorn - Duff House
After the Nazis invaded Poland on 1st Sept 1939, many Polish soldiers managed to escape and fought alongside the Allied forces. Just after the end of the war, the Polish 9th Lancers were stationed at Duff House, and many of them stayed in the area and built new lives, becoming a vibrant part of today's community in the area.
This project, by Macduff Heritage Society supported by Friends of Duff House, has collected the stories from many of those families, so they can be told and not lost. These are shown on a series of 36 panels in the Long Gallery at Duff House. The Exhibition title is the Eagle of Poland, a symbol of strength, courage and the founding of the Polish state; the Unicorn of Scotland represents purity, innocence and power, resonating with the strength and untameable nature of the Scottish people.
