About Rosehearty Harbour
Rosehearty has two harbours. The old harbour, formed by two stone piers, covers 2 acres. Port Rae Harbour, now disused, lies to the east and spans 10 acres. Forty years ago, during the herring season, it was barely large enough for all the drifters landing their fish for the twelve curers of Rosehearty. One of Scotland’s oldest seaports, Rosehearty once had a fishing fleet supporting 600 people. The current harbour extends to 3,400 square metres, featuring a one-basin layout with 120 metres of quayside inside the harbour and a further 120 metres along the outer breakwater, which is exposed to winds from the east to north-east. Around 20 boats, mostly involved in part-time fishing, use the harbour regularly.Rosehearty is believed to have been founded by a party of Danes shipwrecked there in the early 14th century. Like many coastal towns, it experienced a fishing boom in the 19th century but is now a purely recreational harbour. Its rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, and historic monuments make it an attractive area for walking and exploration.
