About Kincardine O'Neil Old Parish Church
The former Parish Church of Kincardine O'Neil, dedicated to St Mary the Blessed Virgin, is believed to have been built around 1330 and remained in use until the 1860s. It was burned and rebuilt in 1733, restored in the 18th and 19th centuries, and its ruins were consolidated in the 20th century and again in 2017.A church is thought to have stood on this site since the 5th century, when local saint St Erchard established a place of worship following his ordination. The original structure was larger and included a hospital at the east end—its foundations are still visible today.Architectural highlights include buttressed north and south walls, a series of high-set lancet windows on the south side, and a fine 14th-century Gothic pointed doorway on the north (now blocked). The west gable features a bellcote added in the 17th century.
