About Ben Macdui
The second highest mountain in Britain, Ben Macdui is at the heart of the arctic-like Cairngorms plateau, one of the wildest places in Scotland. Though often climbed from Speyside via the Cairngorm ski area, the approach from the Linn of Dee in Aberdeenshire is far grander, passing the lovely pinewoods of Derry Lodge and ascending via the Sron Riach ridge. The plateau itself is extremely exposed and tricky to navigate in less than perfect conditions - particularly serious when under snow. The summit is said to be haunted by the wraith-like Old Grey Man, Am Fear Liath Mor.
