About It’s Not Where You Start by Scott Kyle - The Tivoli Theatre
A powerful, funny and deeply human storytelling show by Scott Kyle
Based on his bestselling memoir, It’s Not Where You Start is an uplifting solo storytelling show blending theatre, autobiography, projected animation and film to tell an extraordinary life story with warmth, humour and honesty.
From foster child to foster carer, high-school dropout to university graduate, and from Glasgow’s back streets to Hollywood film sets, Scott Kyle’s journey is anything but ordinary. Written off early and told to keep his expectations low, Scott reflects on childhood, class, identity and belonging — and on how the stories we’re told, and the ones we tell ourselves, can change the direction of a life.
Alongside the personal journey, the show offers rare behind-the-scenes insight into Scott’s career working on major film and television productions. A substantial section focuses on his time on the globally loved series Outlander, alongside reflections on working with Harrison Ford, Ken Loach (The Angels’ Share), and the Oscar-winning producers behind The King’s Speech (Kajaki). These experiences are shared not as celebrity anecdotes, but as touchstones exploring imposter syndrome, self-belief, second chances and stepping into worlds you were never meant to access.
Laugh-out-loud funny in places and deeply moving in others, It’s Not Where You Start is a raw, heartfelt and ultimately hopeful celebration of resilience, creativity and the quiet power of empathy — a powerful reminder that the most unlikely lives can make the most unforgettable stories.
