The Grassic Gibbon Centre

The Grassic Gibbon Centre celebrates the life and writings of James Leslie Mitchell, better known by his pen name, Lewis Grassic Gibbon, the acclaimed novelist of the Mearns. Located in the heart of Arbuthnott, where Mitchell spent his formative years and which inspired his masterpiece Sunset Song, the Centre promotes this major literary figure while also fostering an understanding of the area’s history and culture.Permanent features include storyboards and audio-visual displays tracing Mitchell’s life and work, alongside unique exhibits such as his books, personal effects, and original artefacts of social, cultural, and historical interest.The Centre also houses a café serving home-cooked meals, hot snacks, and baked goods throughout the day, with takeaway options including home baking, jams, and jellies. A gift shop and Post Office are also on site. Facilities include disabled access, free Wi-Fi, car parking with an electric vehicle charging point, and an outdoor children’s play area. The Centre is signposted on the B967 and accessible from both the A90 and A92.For events, the Centre and adjacent Arbuthnott Hall offer a large hall accommodating 90–180 people depending on seating arrangements, complete with a small stage suitable for exhibitions, dinners, musical, or academic events. A smaller meeting room is available for 24–48 people, and catering can be provided throughout the facility.
