About St Cyrus National Nature Reserve
St Cyrus is one of the richest and most diverse nature reserves in Britain, featuring towering volcanic cliffs, expansive beaches, stunning displays of wildflowers, and an incredible variety of insects and birds. The grasslands of the reserve are protected by inland cliffs and a seaward ridge of sand dunes, creating a haven for wildlife. In summer, the area bursts with colour and activity, from the vibrant purple of clustered bellflowers to the flurry of butterflies and moths. Peregrine falcons can often be seen circling high above, ready to dive on their prey.Visitors may also spot common and grey seals basking on sandbanks at the river mouth, while dolphins, porpoises, and even minke, humpback, and killer whales have been sighted offshore. Spring and summer are ideal for observing plants and breeding birds, while winter offers opportunities to see wading birds. Excellent views can be enjoyed from the clifftop at the village end.The visitor centre, located in the old lifeboat station, provides information on the area’s history and wildlife. Awarded Gold status by the Green Tourism Business Scheme, it includes toilets, including accessible facilities, open daily from April to October and Monday to Friday from November to March.
