Drum Castle, Garden & Estate

About Drum Castle, Garden & Estate

Drum Castle’s 700 years of history are evident in its sturdy battlements, medieval square tower, and sprawling extensions. The Royal Forest and Tower of Drum were granted to the Irvine family by Robert the Bruce in 1323. Later additions include a Jacobean mansion house and a Victorian-era library in the lower hall. The beautiful Garden of Historic Roses is divided into quadrants showcasing rose cultivation from the 17th to the 20th century. The ancient oak forest adjoining the castle provides a sense of continuity through the centuries and is home to red kites, roe deer, red squirrels, and badgers.Visitors can enjoy homemade cakes and bakes, locally sourced ice cream, and a range of specialty teas and coffees. Homemade soup, sandwiches, toasties, bacon rolls, and savoury specials are served between 12 pm and 3 pm.Only 10 miles from Aberdeen, Drum offers a charming 16th-century one-bedroom apartment within its ancient courtyard. Warm and cosy with a log-burning stove and central heating, it makes an ideal base for exploring Royal Deeside. The exquisite estate includes a 16th-century chapel, the Garden of Historic Roses, and a woodland designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest—making it a perfect romantic getaway for two.Set amidst an ancient oak forest, Drum uniquely combines its medieval tower, fine Jacobean mansion, and opulent Victorian interiors. Once a Scottish stronghold and hunting lodge, Drum Castle now serves as a spectacular venue for intimate weddings and gatherings. The 16th-century chapel accommodates up to 50 guests for religious ceremonies, followed by champagne receptions on the historic south lawn or private castle tours. In spring and summer, the Garden of Historic Roses bursts with colour, providing a stunning setting for alfresco parties. Inside, the elegant library—with its vaulted ceilings and open fireplace—is perfect for drinks receptions or civil and humanist ceremonies. The graceful dining room seats up to 50 for sumptuous meals overlooking the grounds, while larger events, fundraisers, or private functions can be held outdoors in the castle’s expansive grounds. If you'd like it shorter or more focused on a specific aspect, just let me know!
