Loch Muick

Surrounded by pine trees and dramatic hills, Loch Muick is one of the region’s most iconic wild swimming spots. Located on the Balmoral Estate, the water is fresh and crisp, even in summer, but the views make every dip worthwhile.

The Linn of Dee

Tucked nearBraemar, the Linn of Dee offers dramatic river pools surrounded by pine forest. This scenic gorge on the River Dee is great for a quick plunge, but the fast-flowing water and rocky terrain mean it’s best for confident swimmers.

The River Don 

The River Don offers some gentle spots for wild swimming, particularly around Inverurie, Alford, and Kemnay. You’ll find peaceful pools and slow-moving water. Perfect for a summer’s day swim.

Knockburn Loch 

Technically not 100% wild, but Knockburn Lochnear Banchoryis a purpose-built, spring-fed loch that’s popular with open-water swimmers and triathletes. It’s a great option if you want a safer, structured introduction to outdoor swimming.

Aberdeen Beach

Fancy a dip with city convenience? Aberdeen Beach offers open sea swimming just minutes from Union Street. Brave the North Sea and you’ll be rewarded with invigorating waves, long sandy stretches, and even dolphin sightings if you’re lucky.

  • Never swim alone Always go with a buddy or let someone know where you are.
  • Check conditions  Rivers and seas can change quickly. Look for calm days and avoid strong currents or high rainfall.
  • Enter slowly  Let your body adjust to the temperature gradually.
  • Wear bright colours A tow float or colourful swim cap helps you stay visible.
  • Respect nature Leave no trace, avoid disturbing wildlife, and don’t swim near livestock or nesting birds.
