Grab your running shoes and smash the Great Aberdeen Run
25 June 2018
Are you feeling inspired by all of the incredible runners who took part in the London Marathon? We are too. And if you’re wondering what it might take to complete a marathon, we think we have the answers: drive; determination; stamina; and a desire to achieve something new.
We know that completing a marathon is on most people’s bucket list. We have no doubt you can smash the Great Aberdeen Run this summer!
Here’s five reasons to visit Aberdeen and take part in the Great Aberdeen Run on Sunday 26 August:
1. Go sightseeing like you never thought you would
Be challenged to explore a new city not just by foot, but by literally running around it! You’ll take in the sites of Aberdeen’s famous Granite Mile – our main street lined with stunning classic grey granite architecture and a long history to match – and cool down with that fresh breeze off the North Sea as you make your way past our golden sandy city beach.
2. Be part of a movement
Feel that collective buzz as you join 8,000 other determined runners to take on the challenge. There will be entertainment, great music and an electric atmosphere as the crowd’s cheers keep you going the whole way along the route.
3. Use it as an excuse to sample local food and drink
Surely you will be deserving of a treat after months of training for your run? This is a place where generous nature and Aberdonian ingenuity combine to create hearty flavours. Chill out with a craft beer at BrewDog’s flagship bar, appreciate a comforting dram in a whisky snug, dine alfresco in one of our city centre cafes or pull out all the stops when you visit a Michelin Guide restaurant.
4. Experience a unique tradition
Head to Aberdeen a day early as we invite you to experience one of our unique traditions. Lucky for you runners, one of our most famous Highland Games is also taking place this weekend, on Saturday 25 August 2018. Lonach Highland Gathering & Games remains so popular thanks to its celebrity guests; see mass pipe bands, highland dancing, tug-o-war and many more traditional sports.
5. Extend your outdoor adventure
And after all that, if the run has revealed that inner adventurer in you, then get back to nature when you try out some of our outdoor activities in Aberdeenshire. Venture out in the crisp and clean air with views for miles, from our mountains to our wide sandy expanses. In summer you can bag Munros, hike, mountain bike, surf, kite-board and just roam free.
The Simplyhealth Great Aberdeen Run takes place on 26 August 2018. The half marathon, 10k and family run routes will take you on a tour across Aberdeen city centre. To sign up for the Great Aberdeen Run just visit www.greatrun.org/great-aberdeen-run.
