Walk along Aberdeen Beach Esplanade

Explore Old Aberdeen

Step back in time with a wander through Old Aberdeen.

Cobbled streets, historic buildings and the grounds around King’s College feel especially atmospheric in winter, offering a peaceful and free way to explore the city’s heritage.

Located in the city centre, Aberdeen Art Gallery is free to enter and offers a warm, welcoming space during colder months.

Discover Aberdeen Maritime Museum

Learn about the city’s strong connection to the sea at Aberdeen Maritime Museum, overlooking the harbour.

From shipbuilding to offshore energy, it’s a fascinating and free stop on a winter day in the city.

Wander through David Welch Winter Gardens

The David Welch Winter Gardens, located within Duthie Park, are free to visit year-round (though donations are appreciated), and offer a colourful indoor escape filled with tropical plants and seasonal displays.  Kids of all ages will love McPuddock the pond-dwelling frog and Spike the talking cactus.

Discover Hazlehead Park

Hazlehead Park is one of Aberdeen’s oldest and most historic parks. Here you’ll find woodland walks, nature trails and bridleways, along with a newly refurbished large children’s playground, pets’ corner, maze, golf courses, numerous gardens, and a delicious café not to be missed.

The park is also home to two formal rose gardens: the Queen Mother’s Rose Garden and the North Sea Memorial Rose Garden, which commemorates the victims of the Piper Alpha Production Platform disaster.

Stonehaven Tolbooth museum

Discover the history and heritage of Stonehaven at the Tolbooth Museum.

Entry is free, making it an easy addition to a coastal walk or harbour stroll. Opening times can vary seasonally, so it’s best to check ahead before visiting.

Go birdwatching

Birdwatching across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire is a rewarding winter activity that costs nothing and can be enjoyed close to home.

Well-known locations include harbours, beaches, nature reserves and quiet countryside paths, all offering the chance to pause, observe and enjoy the region’s natural wildlife when conditions are calm and safe.

Visit Aden country park

Found near Mintlaw, Aden Country Park is free to explore year-round and offers a mix of woodland walks, open parkland and historic features. The park also includes the remains of Aden House and open green spaces ideal for fresh air and wildlife spotting.

Warm up in Aberdeen Central Library

Located in the heart of Aberdeen city and close to Aberdeen Art Gallery and His Majesty’s Theatre, spend time browsing, reading or simply enjoying the architecture at Aberdeen Central Library. It’s free to visit and often hosts exhibitions and displays throughout the year.
