Heritage & history

Once a small fishing village, Portlethen has grown into one of Aberdeenshire’s largest coastal towns while retaining glimpses of its maritime past. The old harbour in Old Portlethen offers a charming reminder of its seafaring heritage, with nearby villages like Findon and Downies adding to the area’s coastal character.

Historic routes

Portlethen lies east of the ancient Causey Mounth Road, once the only route from the south to Aberdeen. This historic path played a key role in Scotland’s Civil War, when Covenanter forces marched north in 1639.

Coastal life

Today, Portlethen offers a mix of historic intrigue and modern living. Explore rugged cliffs, hidden coves and sweeping views across the North Sea — a reminder of the area’s enduring connection to land, sea and story.
