About Classics at Mannofield - Mannofield Church

You are warmly invited to join Grampian Concert Orchestra (Aberdeen) for a stirring afternoon of classical music at a wonderful community venue. Under the expert baton of conductor Tim Tricker, the orchestra will present a splendid programme of timeless masterpieces. This richly varied programme brings together five remarkable works, spanning the drama, lyricism and national character of some of Europe’s most distinctive composers.

The concert opens with Schumann’s powerful Overture to The Bride of Messina, a work of sweeping Romantic passion and theatrical intensity. Grieg’s rarely performed Symphony in C minor follows, revealing the youthful genius of Norway’s most celebrated composer through its soaring melodies and vibrant orchestral colour.

The second half begins with Glinka’s Kamarinskaya, a sparkling and influential masterpiece often regarded as a cornerstone of Russian orchestral music. Audiences will then be transported homeward by Scottish composer Hamish MacCunn’s beloved tone poem The Land of the Mountain and the Flood, an evocative musical portrait of Scotland’s majestic landscapes, rushing waters and rugged beauty. Completing the programme is Rachmaninov’s energetic Scherzo in D minor, an exhilarating early work brimming with youthful brilliance, rhythmic vitality and flashes of the composer’s unmistakable melodic gift.

From Scottish vistas and Russian folk inspiration to Romantic drama and Nordic grandeur, this promises to be a captivating journey through some of the most colourful orchestral music of the nineteenth century. Join us for an inspiring afternoon of live music performed by one of the region’s finest orchestras.
