About Piper Alpha Memorial Banner - Aberdeen Maritime Museum

The Piper Alpha Memorial Banner is displayed annually to mark the anniversary of the 1988 disaster. This banner was commissioned by the Victorian Trades Hall Council of Australia to commemorate those who lost their lives. It was sent to the City of Aberdeen in 1989 as a gesture of sympathy and international solidarity.

The banner shows the northern seascape surrounding the oil platform and the seabirds that visit offshore installations.
Squares carry the names of those who died.

Julie Montgarrett, the Australian maker of this banner, has participated in over 70 solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia, Canada, Japan and the United Kingdom.
