About Brush Making Workshop with Simon Cooper - The Barn

Join Simon Cooper, The Bumbling Basketeer for a hands-on introduction to the traditional craft of hand-bound brush making.

Using natural fibres, cotton handles, strong binding thread and simple tools, participants will learn the techniques used to create durable household brushes that are both practical and beautiful. Guided step-by-step through the process, you will make your own hand-bound brushes to take home and use every day.

Working with natural Tampico fibre from the agave cactus and Arenga fibre from the sugar palm, you will discover how traditional brushes are built by hand using techniques that have changed little over generations. These sustainable natural fibres create hard-wearing brushes designed for everyday use.

Brush making is a heritage craft rooted in utility, skill and an understanding of natural materials. In an age of disposable products, learning these techniques offers a deeper connection to making and the satisfaction of creating something useful with your own hands.

No previous experience is required. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with an interest in traditional crafts, basketry, green woodworking, sustainability and handmade objects.

Participants will leave with their own hand-bound brushes, an understanding of traditional brush-making techniques and the confidence to continue exploring the craft.
