Lunchtime Talk: Early Printing in Aberdeen - Aberdeen Art Gallery
Dates:
5th Nov 2025
About Lunchtime Talk: Early Printing in Aberdeen - Aberdeen Art Gallery
Talk by Professor Peter Reid from Robert Gordon University and Almut Boehme, music curator at the National Library of Scotland.
In response to the display of John Forbes’ 'Songs and Fancies' (Gallery 15), This talk will look at early printing in Aberdeen, focusing on Edward Raban, the first printer in the city whose work included music. It will also explore some of the broader issues of early music printing, publishing, and dissemination in Scotland.
John Forbes’ 'Songs and Fancies' was published in Aberdeen in 1682. This early edition of secular music is on loan from the National Library of Scotland as part of their 'Outwith' programme, marking the shared centenary of the National Library of Scotland and the Art Gallery’s Cowdray Hall.
