The Deeside Way

About The Deeside Way

The Deeside Way is a 41-mile path running from Aberdeen to Ballater, following the line of the old Royal Deeside Railway. The route is suitable for walkers and cyclists, with many sections also accessible for horses. The journey is often broken into four sections: Aberdeen to Drumoak , Drumoak to Banchory , Banchory to Aboyne , and Aboyne to Ballater .Aberdeen to Drumoak: 10.6 miles / 17 km Starting at the Polmuir Road entrance to Duthie Park, the route passes through Aberdeen suburbs to Peterculter (note: the Peterculter section is currently closed due to fallen trees), then continues past Coalford to Dalmaik and Drumoak. This section takes approximately 3–4 hours to walk.Drumoak to Banchory: 7 miles / 11 km Heading west out of Drumoak, you pass through Crathes and the historic Park Estate, once an ancient hunting ground of Robert the Bruce. Enjoy scenic views of the River Dee and rolling hills en route to Banchory. This section takes about 2–2.5 hours.Banchory to Aboyne: 13 miles / 21 km The longest section takes you south of the river from Banchory, uphill through forests, descending toward the River Dee at Potarch, and onward to Kincardine O’Neil, the oldest village on Deeside. The route then climbs into forest trails before rejoining the old railway line into Aboyne. Much of this section is off the railway line, offering expansive views of Aberdeenshire. (Note: this section is currently blocked by fallen trees east of Aboyne.) Duration: 4–5 hours.Aboyne to Ballater: 11 miles / 17.7 km This final section follows the old railway line again, passing Deeside Gliding Club airfield and Dinnet, before reaching Cambus O’May and its notable suspension bridge, partially damaged by flooding in 2015. Cambus O’May Creamery is a perfect stop for refreshments. The path then winds through Ballater, evoking the charm of Queen Victoria’s era. Duration: 3–4 hours.
