About Macduff Harbour
The foundations of the modern Macduff Harbour were established by the Duff family, particularly James, the Second Earl of Fife. Construction began in the 1770s, with the first basin created in 1783. By 1791, two basins—east and west—were in place, with the west basin remaining unchanged to this day. The Duff family owned the harbour until 1898, when it was transferred to Macduff Town Council.Macduff functions as a general cargo and fishing port, featuring a slipway with side-slipping arrangements for up to four boats. Approximately 40 boats operate from here, primarily landing at larger ports but returning to Macduff for repairs and maintenance. The harbour also houses a fully enclosed fish market, where sales take place when local catches are available. The port maintains a steady cargo trade, handling imports and exports including coal, fishmeal, soyameal, rock salt, and sugar beet. A non-compulsory pilotage service is offered, and the port is equipped with VHF communication, a weighbridge, and stevedore facilities.Visitors can also explore the Macduff RNLI shop
, open from May to December every Wednesday and Saturday between 2 pm and 4 pm.
