Kinnaird Head Castle and Lighthouse

About Kinnaird Head Castle and Lighthouse

Kinnaird Head Castle & Lighthouse is a unique site where a 16th-century castle was transformed into Scotland’s first lighthouse in 1787 by the Northern Lighthouse Board. Originally built for the Fraser family, the castle was adapted to house the lighthouse, which still retains its working lantern and historic interior, left much as it was by its last crew. A nearby modern, unmanned light now serves as the active beacon.Managed by the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, the site offers three attractions with one admission: the museum, Kinnaird Head Castle, and a guided tour of the lighthouse.Visitors can also enjoy sea views and refreshments at the on-site Tea Room. Note: Historic Scotland membership does not currently include free entry.
