Dripping with irreverent humor, “Poor Piero” is a two-act divertissement by Achille Campanile, adapted from his novel in 1961. The play tells the chaotic story of a dead man, Piero, who is stolen, hidden, and adorned with epitaphs, obituaries, and decorations amidst the tears and outbursts of in-laws and friends. In a surreal twist, Piero resurrects from the shock of death only to truly die again, causing chaos at a funeral diverted to another deceased.

Campanile’s disarming humor transforms the tragic event of death into a surreal spectacle. His gentle humor is rich with double entendres, sharp quips, and rapid dialogue exchanges, joyfully dismantling the taboo of death and exposing the hypocrisy of bourgeois manners. Through revolutionary laughter, Campanile sheds the heavy burden of common sense, starting with Piero’s peculiar testamentary wishes.

Our directorial interpretation exaggerates the author’s humor, creating extreme characters where common sense and human instincts are overshadowed by false morality and social conventions. As the grim reaper silently observes this social farce, the inevitable fate of all characters looms, culminating in a grand finale that fulfills the prologue’s hints. Join us for a night of laughter and irreverence in “Poor Piero.”
