Peterhead

Found in the depths of the powerful Aberdeenshire coast, Peterhead is a name synonymous with seafood, thanks to its bustling fishing port.

One of the region’s favourite attractions can be found in Peterhead, the former ‘HM Convict Prison’, now open to the public as Peterhead Prison Museum. It’s a chance to understand real prison life and find out the ‘inside story’ direct from prison guards that once served at the notorious prison, as part of the audio tour.

Adding to the spectacle and grandeur of the place, just along the road you will find the dramatic cliff edge ruin of Slains Castle. It’s here that Bram Stoker is said to have been so inspired by the castle that he created Dracula!

Continue along the coast to the north and discover the Loch of Strathbeg – a winter home for thousands of fascinating seabirds.

Another reason to pay a visit to Peterhead is the The Buchanhaven Heritage Centre. Popular for its range of exhibitions, covering fishing, local industry and even WWI history, the centre is a hub to find out more and understand our rich culture.
