Delgatie Castle

Toggle location map

The Castle has largely been in the Hay family since it was taken from the Earls of Buchan after the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 when Robert the Bruce defeated the English army.

Mary Queen of Scots stayed here for 3 days after the battle of Corrichie in 1562. The turnpike stair is reputed to be the widest in Scotland, measuring over 5 feet, with the stairs going all the way to the top of the Castle and also unique for being built within the thickness of the wall.

Our original painted ceilings dated 1592 and 1597 are amongst the finest in Scotland - strange animals are depicted some with human faces thought to represent the people who lived in the Castle at that time.

Today the Castle is kept as it was when the late Capt. Hay of Delgatie was alive and almost all the rooms in the main tower are open to see - the beautiful ballroom with a brass fender - a present from the czar of Russia on the occasion of a wedding, beautiful paintings, a very fine library.

With the help of boards in each room written by Capt. Hay, who opened Delgatie following the pain staking restoration by himself and his late wife, and knowledgeable guides the visitor gains an insight in to the history of the castle and Capt. Hay’s personality and his love of life.

The future of the Castle is taken care of by a small charitable trust and its trustees - all volunteers - are passionate about it in every way. Currently the grounds are the main focus of their work.

The “Laird’s Kitchen” offers the very best in home baking and fine food using local ingredients. The tearoom is the proud recipient of many awards for the quality and service that they offer, along with the friendly and welcoming smile.

Our pretty little tearoom offers the very best in Scottish hospitality and food.

We are renowned for our home-baking with our delicious light and tasty scones and pancakes carrot, lemon, chocolate and coffee cakes and much much more. Receiving the Scottish Home baking Award on more than one occasion has been a great honour and only the best in Scotland achieve this.

The lunch menu is created using locally sourced produce including fish from Macduff, free range eggs, local cheese, and each dish is made to order. The delights of Stornaway Black Pudding with mushrooms and cream sauce; Cockburn Haggis from Dingwall served with eggs benedict accompanied by hollandaise sauce; our delicious smoked salmon with a free range egg on crumpet can’t fail to tempt the taste buds.

We do have a menu but if kids for example want a bacon sandwich, scrambled egg or a chicken sandwich then we are only too happy to try and help. Dietary requirements, such as gluten free are catered for as well.

Having a holiday is the opportunity to have peace and quiet and relax away from everyday life or be active and visit tourist attractions, watch for dolphins, see the puffins on our lovely coast, walk or visit the lovely beaches and harbours.  The area has so much to offer and Delgatie Castle is a wonderful base for the Castle, Whisky and Coastal Trails. There are golf courses locally at Duff House, Oldmeldrum, Macduff and many more.

The Symbister and Hayfield Suite in the Castle offer self-catering accommodation with character and the luxury of a home away from home. Elegant four poster bed, cosy duvets and fluffy towels all add to the experience.

Elmwood in the Coach House has the ground floor designed to accommodate disabled people and is large and spacious.
