The Ghaist Drifter and Other Tales
'The Ghaist Drifter and Other Tales' is a landlubber's homage in paintings to the fisher folk of the North East of Scotland. It's a vision of the men and women, boats, restless sea, vast skies through stone and steel, wood and currents of the imagination.
It's a wistful kind of surrealism that informs many of these nostalgic images of the sea and the little boats in which fishermen bartered with God and magic, forged friendships and risked their lives over many generations. The hardships of the women folk, those who gutted fish, mended nets and in some instance carried their husbands through the shallows to waiting fishing boats, is matched by their comradeship, songs and humour. All the paintings are related to the Moray coast with the occasional nod towards Catalonia. It is a homage to the fisher folk who built the boats, sailed the northern seas and tended the home fires.
Additionally, there are paintings displaying a simple love of the light, the shingle beaches, and magnificent cliffs of this breathtaking North Sea coast. Ultimately this is a celebration of the sea, its power, threat, beauty and bounty.
