Museum of Scottish Lighthouses

Ever heard of a full-size lighthouse built right through the middle of a 16th Century castle? No? Well seeing is believing, so come and share in the wonder of this truly unique castle, understand the lifestyle and courage of the lighthouse keepers and marvel at the sophisticated engineering that saved lives. The museum's guides are fully trained and love to laugh.

The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses is based in the bustling fishing port of Fraserburgh on the North-east corner of Aberdeenshire. It’s all here; Kinnaird Head Lighthouse – the very first lighthouse on mainland Scotland (1787), Kinnaird Head Castle containing the lighthouse and a purpose-built museum alongside.

The museum tells the great story of the Northern Lighthouse Board, the engineers who built the lights and the keepers who tended them. It is a story of skill, courage, technical genius and brilliant organisation.

Your admission ticket gives you access to 3 great attractions on one site: The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, Kinnaird Head Castle and a guided tour of Kinnaird Head Lighthouse.

At the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses you'll find a truly stunning sea view to accompany your food and drink at the wonderful Tea Room. The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses have it all, right down to their super-fast Wi-Fi.

The only struggle might be to leave before lunchtime when they start preparing fresh, locally-sourced hot meals to continue to delight you.

Interested in local cuisine? The museum's Fishy Friday lunches include locally-sourced haddock in homemade breadcrumbs, served with garden peas and new tatties (please book in advance, they're popular!).
