Portlethen

Portlethen

Portlethen was originally a fishing village, but now is one of the largest residential coastal towns in Aberdeenshire.

Smaller villages, including Findon and Downies, lie to the east of the town. The town’s original harbour can be found in Old Portlethen.

The town has a fascinating history. It sits east of Causey Mouth road where it was once the only route from the south to Aberdeen. It connected the Bridge of Dee with Muchalls Castle and nearby Stonehaven, located seven miles away. Also, James Graham 1st Marquess of Montrose and William Keith, 7th Earl Marischal led a Covenanter 9000-strong army to the first battle of the Civil War in 1639.

Today, Portlethen has a strong retail and food and drink offering.
