Argentine tango is a total improvised dance and, as such, relies on communication within the dance partnership and a shared understanding of the building blocks and structure (or grammar) of the dance. The dance encourages a constant flow of information between the partners, in connection with the music, with the dancers’ bodies able to express the mood of the music as they interpret it, while providing punctuation to the dance, with certain movements able to provide a ‘full stop’ at the end of a musical phrase, or a pause between elements. Certain movements allow the leader to use the follower's legs to draw on the floor, or in the air, with the follower and leader being free to use embellishments to realise their own unique dance. John and Fiona Newton lead a Tango Workshop suitable for all levels.

John and Fiona have been dancing Argentine tango for 20 years and for the past 15 years, have spent a month each year in Buenos Aires dancing and studying intensively. The workshop (appropriate for all levels) will cover: connecting with your partner, using the embrace and the floor; communicating with your partner to create simple steps to form a dance, the ‘basic 8’; understanding and working with your axis; using pivots to change direction; Turns; Using basic techniques to form more complex movements; adornments in the dance for leaders and followers; as well as a small demonstration of how these elements can come together to create an improvised dance.

It is advisable for participants to wear loose comfortable clothing and to avoid rubber-soled shoes if possible. If people only have trainers, they can dance in socks.
