C.J. Cooke is an acclaimed, award-winning poet, novelist and academic with numerous other publications written under the name of Carolyn Jess-Cooke. Her work has been published in twenty-three languages to date. Born in Belfast, C.J. has a PhD in Literature from Queen’s University, Belfast, and is currently Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow, where she researches creative writing interventions for mental health. C.J. Cooke lives in Glasgow with her husband and four children .

Katalina Watt is Literature Officer at Creative Scotland. Her short fiction has been published in various magazines and anthologies including Haunted Voices, unspeakable, and Extra Teeth. She has appeared at festivals and literary events including Edinburgh International Book Festival, Cymera, and FIYAHCON.

Granite Noir has teamed up with the Press and Journal and Evening Express once again to launch this year’s short story competition! Open to writers of 18 years and above, stories of between 1500 and 2000 words should be written on any of themes explored in this year’s Granite Noir programme and submitted by Sunday 26 January 2025. A shortlist of five stories will be decided by the panel of judges in February and the winner announced at the Festival.
