Touring by Foot

You’ll be sure to smash those daily step targets in Aberdeen with many walking routes around the city. Walking tours (both guided and self-guided), take you to iconic landmarks, historic sites and even on art tours.

Speaking of art - in most cities you’ll only find contemporary art in a gallery (we have one of them too!). But in Aberdeen we display art high on the walls of buildings in the heart of the city centre.  Nuart Aberdeen and the Painted Doors projects have created a popular attraction that takes both tourists and locals on a street art trail – which is also a great way to see some of the top attractions in the city.

You can’t go about the city without taking in the unique history of this place. Visit our two old towns, Old Aberdeen and the ancient fishing quarters of Footdee (pronounced Fittie), which are packed with history dating back to the 14th century!

There’s also the option to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and head along the 41 mile-long Deeside Way which runs from the centre of Aberdeen all the way to Ballater, exposing you to the beauty of the Cairngorms National Park along the way.

And from countryside escapes to sandy dunes – our 165 miles of coast offer walking routes across expansive sands that stretch along the Aberdeenshire coast and take you through some of the most picturesque coastal fishing villages in Scotland. Top tip: take a relaxed walk through the 18th century built Pennan, made famous by the film Local Hero which was filmed here in the 1980’s.

Whether you choose to take on the mountains, sandy dunes or see the city sights up close, you won’t miss spectacular rugged countryside, coastal views or impressive architecture.
