Your guide to Aberdeen’s craft beers
14 August 2018
Craft beer lovers you’re in for a real treat when you visit North-east Scotland… did you know that BrewDog was born here?
The journey started in Fraserburgh in 2007 when the founders found themselves “bored of the industry brewed lagers and stuffy ales”. This inspired them to brew their very own hardcore beer – this time for punks – and sell it at local markets.
11 years later, and still with the same mission to “make other people as passionate about craft beer as we are” BrewDog has been included in the ‘Sunday Times Fast Track 100’ a record six years in a row.
“Our history is written on the streets of our hometown” (BrewDog). In Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire, the fond home and favourite city of the craft beer giant, you will find its Brewery, DogTap - you can go on a ‘DogWalk’ (tour) here and even sample the famous beers straight from bottling – its two bars, including the flagship bar, and even late-night bar at Castlegate.
But it doesn’t end there; the craft beer revolution has rippled! Fierce is following closely in BrewDog’s footsteps and has just opened its very first city centre bar. Top tip: add the very Scottish ‘Cranachan Killer’ to the must-try list.
Along the vast coastline of Aberdeenshire you will see that our craft beer story continues. Brew Toon is the newest microbrewery to open its doors. Learn how this small batch craft beer is lovingly created and there’s also the option to sample the headliner beers in the café bar (there’s one called the Weekend Hooker).
In the city centre, there are specialist bars serving up our local craft beers as well as favourites from across the world. In CASC pick from a huge bottle collection, as well as whiskies and cigars. The Craftsman ale house, even has its own lager ‘ Lager than Life’ permanently on tap! Nearby six°north is serving up classic Belgian beers as well as sharing bottles.
