The independent galleries and museums here play a strong part in what makes Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire so special for me. You’ll find me out and about doing the rounds, learning about this part of Scotland’s strategically important and long history. Here’s some of the great museums and galleries you’ve got to add to your trip itinerary:
Aberdeen Maritime Museum – this museum celebrates our long relationship with the North Sea covering ship building, fishing, port history and the oil & gas industry. This award-winning museum can be found the iconic Shiprow and incorporates Provost Ross’ House which was built in 1593!
Gordon Highlanders Museum – a 5* visitor attraction, the Gordon Highlanders Museum shares and celebrates the legacy of the world-famous Gordon Highlanders Regiment.
Salmon Bothy Museum – A former working salmon house, this is now a museum which showcases artefacts from Portsoy’s harbour and salmon fishing operations!
Be inspired by art
Drum Castle/Aberdeen Art Gallery – whilst Aberdeen Art Gallery undergoes its £30million redevelopment, explore some of its collection in the settings of a 700 year-old Jacobean mansion house, Drum Castle.
Peacock Visual Arts – this is a hub of creativity in the city centre where you can engage with art in an exciting, stimulating and challenging way! You can even take part in workshops here too.
Butterworth Gallery – even the setting of this gallery is unique – a former village shop and post office complete with an old petrol pump and red telephone box! See original artwork by Howard Butterworth and his daughter Mary Louise.
Try a bit of everything else…
Peterhead Prison Museum – Walk in the shoes of a prisoner at former Victorian HM Convict Prison Peterhead - which only closed in 2013! Hear the experiences of actual officers and former inmates as you take the guided audio tour.
Grampian Transport Museum – From supercars and stagecoaches to travelling chariots, a visit to Grampian Transport will open your eyes to the past, present and future of the transport industry!
Aberdeen Science Centre - Home to 50 dynamic exhibits and live-shows, Aberdeen Science Centre is a firm favourite for those interested in the science behind almost anything!
That’s right - there’s enough here to plan a whole trip around visiting our museums and galleries! And if you’re looking for even more visitor information make sure you visit www.visitabdn.com/what-to-do/museums-and-galleries.
