Jon Snow and Ygritte to get married in Aberdeenshire
22 June 2018
Aberdeen is abuzz for the next Royal Wedding. Okay it’s not quite the next Royal Wedding but they are getting married in a castle and Jon Snow is ‘King of the North’ so let’s just go with it.
Aberdeen Airport has seen lots of excitement as celebrities arrive for the wedding of Aberdeenshire born, Rose Leslie to Kit Harington. The couple met while filming Game of Thrones and similar to their on-screen counterparts, the pair fell in love.
The wedding will be held in Wardhill Castle, a stunning 12th century castle that has been in the Leslie family for 900 years. A wedding marquee has been set up in the walled garden and the castle itself can sleep 16 people in ornate decorated bedrooms.
Rose Leslie is the daughter of the chieftan of Clan Leslie and her mother was part of Clan Fraser. She was raised nearby in the 15th century medieval castle, Lickleyhead Castle (just 20 minutes drive from Wardhill Castle). The castle has been owned by many of the Aberdeenshire clans including Forbes, Hay, Duff, Leith and of course Leslie. Nowadays the castle is available for exclusive use for £600 a night on Airbnb.
It’s not the first time some of the stars of the show have visited the North-east of Scotland.
The show’s leading man, and the leading man at tomorrow’s big event, Kit Harington spent time in Aberdeenshire last year. In December, Harington was spotted at Wardhill Castle helping people pack their Christmas trees.
We also heard on the grapevine Harington admitted that a couple of months previously he went to a costume party in Aberdeen dressed as his Game Of Thrones character Jon Snow. Admitting that he’d left it too late to get a costume, when he went to the costume shop the woman pointed out that he looked considerably like, himself, unbeknown to her. When he was offered the costume, his fiancé coaxed him into wearing the outfit.
Co-star Iain Glenn who plays Jorah Mormont first got into acting while studying English at the University of Aberdeen, before moving on to study at RADA. The ancient university was founded in 1495 and in December 2017, Glenn returned to Aberdeen again to take part in a Christmas concert to raise funds for cancer and dementia research at the University of Aberdeen. The event was held at St Machar’s Cathedral in Aberdeen and was an extremely popular Christmas event – selling out very quickly.
When Glenn was in Aberdeen for the event he stopped in for a brew at popular student pub, the Bobbin and was photographed chatting to fans. The Bobbin posted a very excited Facebook post.
It is not yet known whether Glenn will be attending the wedding or which other famous faces we can expect to see descending on the North-east. So far Aberdeen Airport has saw Mother of Dragons, Emilia Clarke; the Hand of the Queen, Peter Dinklage and the last living Baratheon, Joe Dempsie arrive.
