8 photos that prove you need to watch the sun rise and set in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire
6 July 2018
As K.D. Lang once said that “the sky is an infinite movie to me. I never get tired of looking what’s happening up there.” Here in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire we are regularly blessed with spectacular sunsets and sunrises and we seem to get them in every colour of the rainbow (literally!). Here are 8 photos of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have mastered the colours of the rainbow song that’ll make you want to stay out and watch the sky show off all day and night.
Red
They said “Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight” but we’ll argue it’s a delight for all who see it. Check out this incredible capture of the sun-setting at Greyhope Bay by Per Kristian Veiberg… simply gorgeous. Not only does Greyhope Bay get spoilt with jaw-dropping sunsets against daring cliff faces, it is also a great place to spot dolphins.
Orange
Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are very fortunate to boast 165 miles of coastline that revels in the splendour of the sky’s show. Not only do we get to enjoy it, but we also have many talented local photographers who preserve these moments through their camera. Cue Neil Donald’s shot of a sunrise over Balmedie Beach. The contrast between the darkness and the glowing orange horizon is magical.
Yellow
Talk about the picture of tranquillity. There is something so relaxing about this capture of a swan basking in the evening glow in this shot from Lee Fowlie. Pitfour Lake on the Pitfour Estate in Mintlaw is a man-made lake that extends almost 50 acres and is a lovely place for a stroll.
Green
You never know what’s in store for visitors in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. On occasion one of the natural wonders of the world, the Aurora Borealis, has been known to dance across the sky. These miraculous spectacles usually happen in the winter months and are clearer in the parts of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire where there is less light pollution. Phil Horsfall was lucky enough to not only see them but to catch them on camera at Forvie Nature Reserve.
Blue
It almost sounds silly. One of the first things you learn at school when you’re a child is that the sky is blue, so of course we had to feature some of our bonnie blue skies on the list. Although blue skies may be the ones we’ve grown accustomed to it’s important to recognise how beautiful they are. Check out this bright shot from Jolanta Jaskula of the blue skies over Loch Kinord in the Muir of Dinnet Nature Reserve.
Indigo
One of Aberdeenshire’s most famous munros, Lochnagar hits the nail on the head with this segment of the rainbow. How glorious is this shot by Tom Zalitis of an indigo sunset over the snow-capped mountains. This dreamy view highlights one of the many reasons why the Cairngorms National Park is so popular with adventure seekers.
Violet
Although some may complain when clouds invade our skies, it must be said that the clouds bring a very dramatic atmosphere in photographs. Sless captured a moody sky over Tarlair Swimming Pool in Macduff. Although now long-closed, Tarlair Swimming Pool is one of the best surviving examples of Art Deco buildings of its kind in the UK.
All we can say is that the sky really is the limit in beautiful Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire just like this phenomenal shot from White Sky Photographic illustrates. Cue the mic-drop.
