Celebrate Scottish culture at our Highland Games

Highland Games are a historic celebration of Scottish and Celtic culture and Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are well-known for their plentiful celebration of the traditional events -they also make for a great family day out.

Throughout summer there are many Highland Games which can be attended. They’re perfect for a true Scottish experience – bagpipes, kilts, caber toss & highland dancing, to name but a few customs!

  

Here’s a selection of what’s coming up:

Stonehaven Highland Games – Sunday 17 July 2016 

Set in the charming seaside town of Stonehaven, these highland games are as traditional as they come. We recommend extending your trip to enjoy the whole weekend in Stonehaven. There’s an open air swimming pool, museums, a golf course and quaint harbour pubs.

 

Dufftown Highland Games – Saturday 30 July 2016

A perfect taster of our culture, these Highland Games have something for everyone. There’s a full programme of traditional sporting events including the impressive massed pipe bands, highland dancing and tug of war.

 

Aboyne Highland Games – Saturday 6 August 2016

 The annual show has attracted thousands of visitors since it began well over 100 years ago. To this day, the traditional celebration continues to attract people to one of the most beautiful parts of Aberdeenshire. Combine it with a trip along Royal Deeside for a scenic weekend.

 

Ballater Highland Games – Thursday 11 August 2016 

These games have been held ever since 1864, apart from the war years, the games have continued uninterrupted.  With famous competitors, the Ballater Highland Games remain a popular visit for locals and tourists alike. There’s something for all of the family.

 

Lonach Highland Gathering – Saturday 27th August 2016 

A full day of Scottish tradition, it’s a Highland Games not to be missed. Watch the Lonach Highlanders march around the area, followed by a day of competition. From hill races and pipe bands, you’re sure to get into the spirit of Scottish culture.

 

The Braemar Gathering – Saturday 3 September 2016

This Highland Games is world famous thanks to the regular attendance of the royal family and other celebrities. The Braemar Gathering began the early 1800’s and the event has made for a memorable occasion ever since.
