Beer Today Gone on...Sunday?

So for my first blog comprises one of my favourite subjects, beer!

There has been a real explosion in craft beers over the last few years, with Aberdeen’s very own Brewdog and Six Degrees North offering great options to complement some great traditional bars in the city like the Prince of Wales.

"Goodbye to our other resident beer enthusiast"

This leads me on nicely to the VisitAberdeenshire outing to the Aberdeen and North East Beer Festival at the home of Aberdeen FC, Pittodrie. This was as a goodbye to our other resident beer enthusiast Pia, who has been working with us over the summer and is now heading home to Sweden.

There is quite an overwhelming array of beer options available at the festival and thankfully the beer sheet you get on entry lists all the styles and types of beers available. There is even cider for those of you who enjoy that, but it seems a waste at a beer festival!

"Make the most of it and try our scoring system for yourselves"

Attending the beer festival has become a bit of an annual tradition for me and my friends and we always try and make it a bit more interesting by trying to agree on the best beer of the festival. We give each beer a score out of 10 and then try and all have a different beer each so as to try as many as possible. Ultimately this involves much studying of the beer list as if it were the racing odds but it is worth it in the end. My absolute favourite so far is the Windswept Weizen, a lovely wheat beer from Moray which has got a solid 9 out of 10, hard to beat!

I’ll be back on Saturday with my friends to try a few more and if you enjoy trying different beer then I can highly recommend doing the same.  However as it is all subjective it really depends on what type of beer you enjoy. Pia’s favourite was the Hip Hoppopotamus from Ayr, which I’m sure our own Ayrshire lass Nikki may even have enjoyed.

So please drink responsibly, enjoy the festival (your last chance is Saturday) and as they say in Sweden, Skål!
